Affirming Baptism and Growing Faith

When a child is baptized, parents make a commitment about his/her spiritual life on their behalf.  There comes a time, usually between ages 12 and 16, when young adults begin to consider spiritual things at a deeper level. This is one of the most important times in a child's faith development. It is the time in which the church teaches young people what it means to be part of the people of God, and invites them affirm the commitment made for them at baptism. To help them in that decision, we invite them to deepen their faith through an experience called "Affirming Baptism - Growing Faith" or Confirmation.

About The Program

"Affirming Baptism - Growing Faith" is a mentoring-based program that lasts one year. Confirmands meet with their mentors at least twice each month for learning activities. These meetings are held at mutually agreed upon times and always in the youngster's home, a public place, or at church - with other adults or other confirmands and mentors present. The learning activities explore who God is, what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ, the responsibilities of Church membership, the relationship between Christians and members of other religions, and other interesting aspects of a life of faith.

Several times during the year, all of the confirmands and mentors enjoy retreats. They meet together to share their progress, discuss lessons, and even take field trips. We visit a synagogue and a mosque, and do some other fun projects. Church and family members are invited to participate in these activities.

Confirmands are expected to participate in the full life of the church, serving as ushers, communion assistants, greeters, liturgists, and acolytes. At the end of the program, confirmands will meet with Pastor to talk about what they've learned. If a participant decides they are ready to accept the commitment made for them at baptism, they are confirmed, moving to a new, more responsible level of membership in the church. This decision is the participants' to make. Confirmation is not an automatic outcome of the program.

The next confirmation class at St. John's United Church of Christ begins Sunday, May 22, 2016. Students completing the program will be confirmed on Sunday, June 4, 2017. Students and mentors can register for "Affirming Baptism - Growing Faith" using the form below.
